At 2,260 metres, the Tizi n'Tichka pass is the highest paved road in North Africa and the dramatic gateway between the lush north and the arid south. The views are extraordinary — layer after layer of High Atlas peaks, Berber villages clinging to cliffsides, and the landscape shifting from green to terracotta as you cross to the southern slopes. Stop at the summit for photographs and browse artisan stalls selling fossils, minerals, and Berber handicrafts.

Perhaps Morocco's most iconic image — a fortified village (ksar) of earthen clay architecture rising from the banks of a seasonal river. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, Ait Benhaddou has appeared in over 20 major films including Game of Thrones, Gladiator, The Mummy, and Lawrence of Arabia. Walk through the ancient ksar with an expert guide, climb to the top granary for the panoramic view, and visit the Berber families who still live within the walls.
The Rose Valley (Dadès) is one of Morocco's most fragrant surprises. Every spring (April–May), thousands of rose bushes burst into bloom, filling the valley with colour and perfume. The roses are harvested to produce world-famous Moroccan rose water and essential oil. The Dadès Gorges nearby offer dramatic red rock formations and excellent hiking — the "monkey fingers" rock sculptures are a geological wonder.
The Todgha Gorges are one of Morocco's most dramatic natural wonders — a narrow canyon carved through the High Atlas with walls rising 300 metres on either side. A crystal-clear river runs through the base. Rock climbers come from around the world for the challenging routes. A walk through the narrowest section of the gorge is an unforgettable experience.
Local Secret: Most tour groups rush through the Todgha Gorges in 30 minutes. Ask your Medina Journey guide to take you to the upper section of the gorges, beyond where the tour buses stop — the silence and beauty there are extraordinary.

Journey's end — and the beginning of the most magical experience of your trip. Merzouga sits at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes, rising up to 150 metres above the Sahara floor. As afternoon light turns golden, mount a camel for your trek into the dunes and watch the sun paint the Sahara in fire. Your luxury camp awaits — traditional Berber music, a sky full of stars, and a sunrise you will remember forever.
Possible but challenging. Mountain roads require concentration. No local knowledge. Difficult parking at kasbahs. You miss the stories behind every stop. Cheaper upfront but richer experience lost.
