The Sahara desert is one of the most transformative travel experiences on earth — and Morocco is the easiest and most rewarding gateway to it. But a great Sahara desert tour doesn't happen by accident. After guiding hundreds of travellers into the Moroccan desert over 15 years, we've compiled the 10 most essential things to know before you go. Read this before booking anything.

Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) vs Erg Chegaga — They Are Very Different

Morocco has two major Sahara dune fields and they are completely different experiences. Erg Chebbi near Merzouga is the most visited — it has the most iconic, photogenic dunes (up to 150m high), is accessible from Marrakech in 4-5 hours by car, and has the widest choice of camps and activities. It's perfect for a 3-5 day circuit.

Erg Chegaga near Mhamid is Morocco's largest dune field (dunes up to 300m), far more remote, and accessible only by 4x4 tracks through open desert. There is almost no tourism there — just you, the wind, and endless golden silence. It's more adventurous and takes 5-7 days from Marrakech to do properly.

Our recommendation: First-time visitors → Erg Chebbi (Merzouga). Return visitors or adventure seekers → Erg Chegaga (Mhamid). Both are included across our different circuit options.

The Best Time for a Sahara Desert Tour Is October to April

Desert temperatures in Morocco are extreme in both directions. Summer (June–August) sees the Sahara reach 45°C by day — dangerously hot for camel trekking or outdoor activities. Winter nights (December–February) can drop near freezing, which surprises many visitors who imagine the desert is always warm.

The sweet spots are October–November (warm days, cool nights, spectacular light) and March–April (spring, wildflowers, perfect temperatures). These are also our busiest months — book at least 4-6 weeks in advance.

3

A Private Tour Beats a Group Tour — Always

Shared group tours to the Sahara are significantly cheaper — but the experience is incomparably different. On a group tour of 15-25 people, you're rushed, the camp is crowded, the camel trek feels like a queue, and the guide's attention is divided. On a private tour with Medina Journey, your vehicle, guide, camel guide, and camp are exclusively yours. You stop where you want, stay as long as you want, and sleep in a camp with only your group — not strangers on either side.

The price difference is smaller than most people expect, and the experience difference is enormous.

4

The Camel Trek Is Short — And That's Perfect

Many first-timers expect to spend hours on a camel. In reality, the classic sunset camel trek to your desert camp takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours — and that's the ideal duration. Camels are not comfortable animals to ride for extended periods! The trek takes you deep enough into the dunes that you lose sight of civilization entirely, which is all that matters.

For deeper desert exploration, your guide will take you by 4x4 or on foot to the best dune crests for sunrise photography — far better than a multi-hour camel endurance test.

5

Luxury Camp vs Basic Camp — Know the Difference

Desert camps range from basic shared tents with rudimentary facilities to genuine luxury bivouacs. The difference is significant. A basic camp has shared tents, thin mattresses on the floor, shared toilets, and no hot water. A luxury desert camp offers private furnished tents with real beds, en-suite bathrooms, hot water, electricity, quality Berber textiles, gourmet Moroccan cuisine, and a dedicated team including a musician for the evening fire.

At Medina Journey, all our circuits include exclusively private luxury camps. Your group alone — no strangers sharing the fire, no noise from adjacent tents. This is what makes the stargazing experience so profound.

6

Desert Nights Are Cold — Pack Warm Layers

This surprises almost every first-time visitor. The Sahara desert loses heat dramatically after sunset. From October to March, nighttime temperatures regularly drop to 5–10°C in the Merzouga area, and occasionally near freezing at Erg Chegaga. By day you're in a t-shirt; by midnight you're grateful for every layer.

Always pack: a warm fleece or down jacket, long trousers, a wool hat, and warm socks for desert nights. Good camps provide blankets, but your own layers make a significant difference to comfort.

The Sahara Sunrise Is More Spectacular Than the Sunset

Everyone looks forward to the sunset camel trek — and it's magnificent. But the Sahara sunrise is the single most breathtaking moment of any desert tour. Waking before dawn, climbing a dune in the dark with your guide, and watching the first light crack over the horizon — transforming the sand from grey to orange to blinding gold in a matter of minutes — is an experience that is genuinely impossible to photograph adequately and impossible to forget.

Every Medina Journey desert camp guarantees a private sunrise experience with your guide. We wake you at the right time, guide you to the best dune, and let you absorb the silence of the Sahara as the world ignites.

9

The Drive to the Desert Is Part of the Experience

The road from Marrakech to the Sahara is one of the most spectacular drives in the world — and most group tours rush it. A private tour with Medina Journey treats the journey as an integral part of the experience. The Tizi n'Tichka High Atlas pass (2,260m), the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, the Todra Gorges, the Draa Valley palm oasis stretching 200km — these are not inconveniences on the way to the dunes. They are destinations in themselves.

Our 4-day circuit takes you through all of these highlights at a relaxed pace. Our 9-day circuit adds the Atlantic coast return. There is no shortcut worth taking.

Book Your Desert Tour in Advance — Especially for Peak Months

October, November, March, and April are our busiest months — and the best camps get fully booked weeks or months ahead. Private tours require vehicle and guide coordination that cannot be arranged last-minute. We recommend booking at least 4–6 weeks in advance for peak months, and 2 weeks minimum for shoulder season.
